Reds win by 3-2. They win their first series of the year before welcoming in Paul Skenes and the Pirates. Don't get me started on Thursday's match up when Abbott toes the rubber against Skenes. I'm sure we will dive into that on Wednesday.
Back to today's win. Yet again the pitching staff keeps the team in the game long enough for the offense to finally put some quality at bats together. Matt McLain stays hot and leads off the sixth with single. Elly goes down swinging, then Stewart shows big league patience and takes his free base after a five pitch walk. Suarez sent the fourth pitch he saw four hundred and thirty one feet to to the second deck in left. Suarez gets his welcome back moment at the best time.
Rhett Lowder went five innings, striking out 5, giving up only three hits and two runs. The two earned runs given up were of the hot bat of Wilyer Abreu. Reds starters have kept the games in reach in every game to start the season. The bullpen did what was asked of it. Four innings of work with zero runs given up. I have seen some really promising things out of the entire pitching staff in these first three games.
The Reds could not ask for a better start to the year for Sal Stewart. He is seven for ten with four extra base hits. Three doubles and a home run smashing an OPS of 2.069. He leads the team with thirteen total bases. Matt McLain has continued with his spring hitting form. Four for ten hitting, two runs scores, and a team leading four walks drawn to start the regular season.
Tomorrow Chase Burns takes the mound to begin his 2026 campaign. He will take on a Pirates team that will be in Cincinnati for less than twenty four hours before first pitch. I think that will play to the advantage of Burns. While he is already good enough to not need a leg up to compete, at the big league level you take any advantage you get. Pirates are coming off an extra innings win, in New York, and will have to travel from New York to Cincinnati and get geared up to face Burns. I think we see a great first outing tomorrow out of Burns.
I'm expecting:
6IP, 3H, 0R, 2BB, 8K
Score:
Reds: 5
Pirates: 1
Pitching stays lights out and holds the Pirates to one run being charged to the bull pen. Elly and Sal combine for three hits and 3 RBI's. Bold prediction, McLain home run.
Attached again is my score book. I have altered some of the way I track things slightly to make stat tracking easier. I will see you all after the game tomorrow! Thanks for reading and chatting along with me! Who Dey & Go Redlegs!
